I'm filing for a deceased taxpayer whose 2015 return was filed on Turbotax. How is personal identification entered in this case?

Please accept my condolences for your loss. Usually when someone passes, the funeral home notifies the Social Security Administration, (SSA) and they deactivate the deceased social security number, (SSN).  The IRS ties into the SSA to validate an SSN. If the SSN is deactivated, the tax return containing that SSN is rejected.

The only alternative that you have is to paper-file your 2016 tax return. To do this, you would select Paper-File instead of Efile when you are in the File section after completing your return. Then print, sign, date and mail your tax return by April 18, 2017.
