Question

I’m having problems with my taxes. My question is how can i file my taxes without them getting garnished for student loans? I’m working on getting them out of default

Your best course is to deal with the agency servicing your debt.  Try to come to some agreement about repaying the loan so that they don't submit a request to have your tax refund taken.

Contact the agency with which you have a debt to determine if your debt was submitted for a tax refund offset or call the  Treasury Offset Program (TOP) call center at (800) 304-3107. You can enter your SSN in the automated system and it will tell you if you have an offset outstanding for your SSN.

If your debt was submitted for offset, the Treasury Department will reduce your refund as needed to pay off the debt and send it to the agency you owe. Any portion of your remaining refund after offset is issued in a check or direct deposited as originally requested on the return.
