Question

I'm still married but been separated for over 4yr and have no way of contacting her for her SS number. I am filing separate so why need it? Any way around needing it?

It is required.

When filing separately, if one spouse itemizes deduction then both must itemized even if one spouse has nothing to itemize - that spouse cannot take the standard deduction.    The spouses SSN is required to that the tax returns can be matched to verify that both spouses complied with the law.

All you can do is print and mail the return and write UNKNOWN is place of the SSN.
