Question

I moved from MT to TX in 2020. I received dividend income and capital gains in 2020 but do I need to enter the same info in both fed and my MT state returns?

I am retired and receive social security. I am worried that I am double counting my income by entering it in federal and state returns.

You are filing a part-year return for Montana, right?

In the Montana interview, you should be asked which part of what income belongs to Montana. This will be any wages you earned in Montana, any dividends received while in Montana, any capital gains received while in Montana, etc.

Clear?
