Question

I moved in June 2019. I updated my address on the extension I filed a couple of days ago. Will the updated address on my extension also update the IRS of my new address?

No. When Form 4868 is used with a new address, the IRS will not update your mailing address. However, it is possible to update your address simply by filing your tax return with the new address.

See 2019 IRS Form 4868 Instructions, page 3: If you changed your mailing address after you filed your last return, you should use Form 8822, Change of Address, to notify the IRS of the change. Showing a new address on Form 4868 won’t update your record.

For more information about changing your address, including access to Form 8822, see IRS Topic No. 157 Change Your Address - How to Notify the IRS.
