Question

I need to download my 2016 .tax file. It says I need to upgrade/pay. I've already paid to download the TurbotTax 2016 software, so how can I download the .tax file?

You "downloaded" 2016 software---to your own computer?  Then if you used desktop software the tax files are not stored online. They are on your own hard drive.

No.  I prepared my 2016 taxes using TurboTax Online and now I need to file an amendment.  The only way to do so is to purchase the desktop version and upload the .tax file that was created when I filed online.  The message when I try to download said .tax file is that I need to make a purchase, but it doesn't tell me a purchase of what and I don't have an option to upgrade to a different online version.  

 

At the end of the day, I just want to be able to download this .tax file:

First you did not need to buy the downloaded amendment program (as it is free)  so you should get a refund for that ... instead you should have only paid for the 2018 PLUS upgrade to access the 2016 tax file ... to correct both things a call to tech support is needed :
