Hawaii grants an automatic six-month extension. You do not need to file any forms unless you can making an extension payment. TurboTax can prepare Form N-200V.

The extension gives you until October 20, 2021 to file a HI return. However a late payment penalty and interest will be charged on any tax not paid by April 20, 2021.

Mail Form N-200V (which TurboTax prepares) to:

Hawaii Department of Taxation
PO Box 1530
Honolulu, HI  96806-1530

Do NOT file Form N-200V if you are not making a payment. Instead file your tax return by October 20.

@ErnieS0, If my wife and I are not sure if it is best this year for us to file our Hawaii return(s) jointly or married filing separately, will one Hawaii extension payment (calculated as if we were going to file jointly) work? The extension will allow us more time to calculate the best way to file. Thanks.

Hi @wwrocks. The extension payment will be credited under the Social Security number of the payer. If you file separately you would have to get part of the payment re-allocated if you filed jointly in 2019 and separately in 2020.

If you filed separately in 2019 and made separately extension payments in 2020 but decided to file together, then you will have to get one payment moved.
