I need to know what to do if a dependent that I was claiming died

Very sorry for your loss.
If your dependent died at any time during 2017 (even January 1), you would continue to claim him/her as if alive for the entire year. If he/she died any time before 1/1/17, it wouldn't be possible to claim them on the 2017 return.
