Question

I owed money from my 2020 taxes and paid it in full. I recently checked IRS site it says I owe additional 1,700. Why did they add more owed? Is this turbo tax fault?

To be clear I owed money for my 2021 taxes and set up a payment plan and the site never showed money owed for 2020. I’m not sure when it was added or why but I paid the full amount turbo tax told me I owed for 2020 in March of 2021.

Turbotax would normally include underpayment of estimated tax penalties in the amount you owed for 2020. so the reason you owe an additional $1700 for 2020 is unclear. have you checked your transcript for 2020? likely the IRS found more income or errors. $1700 is close to the recovery rebate credit for an individual filing single. perhaps you claimed the credit (it would show up on line 30 of the 1040) when the IRS records showed that you already received it.
