Question

I paid $45 for a state program. Now that I am ready to submit the return, the program asks for another $25! Shouldn't the state program includes the filing of 1 return?

Did you purchase desktop software with state software included?  They sell Deluxe both with and without state software--so you have to be careful which one you choose.  And even if it does have the state software download included, that is for preparing the state.  There is an extra fee to e-file the state.  You can avoid the $24.99 state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.

When using the CD/download product installed on your computer, one state program is usually included in the price for the federal and state together. However, some retailers sell federal and state separately for those who live in states with no state income tax. If you bought federal without state, then the state is extra but it does not include efiling of the state return. With all of the CD/download products, efiling of the state return is an extra fee in all states but NY. You can avoid the fee by printing and mailing the state return.

When using the online product, federal is always sold separately from state so the state is extra but includes efiling of the state return.
