If you are positive that you didn't already e-file your return on an earlier date (or did the non-filer stimulus registration) and you are sure that you are not eligible to be claimed as a dependent by someone else, you may be a victim of identity theft. You will have to file a paper return instead of e-filing. When you print your return for paper filing, also complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit (PDF).  Use a fillable form at IRS.gov, print it, then attach the form to your return and mail your return according to instructions.

You can access IRS resources on identity theft here.

TurboTax also has resources on identity theft here.

There is another possibility. If you used the non filer portal on TurboTax or the IRS to register for the stimulus payment, a tax return was efiled for you with 0 income. That efiled return will prevent you from efiling your "real" tax return. That portal was for use only by those not required to file a tax return.

If that is your situation, you will now have to print and mail a return to get it accepted. You can print it and write across the top "Amended Return" or enclose a letter explaining what happened.  The IRS should accept it without going through the actual amending process where you complete and mail a form 1040X. You could go ahead and prepare and file a form 1040X if you prefer.

Regardless of what you do, you must print and mail it yourself. Follow the filing instructions to know what to include and where to mail it.
