how does the fact that I already paid the tax bill get incorporated when I file now?

Filing in October is the same as filing in April. Note that TurboTax Online will only be available until October 15, less than a week from now. After that you would have to use the CD/Download software. Also, you will not be able to e-file with TurboTax after October 15. You would have to file by mail.

I assume that you made the payment in April with an extension. If you filed the extension from within TurboTax, the amount of your payment should be automatically entered in your tax return. It should be on Schedule 3, line 10. If it's not there you have to enter it yourself.

To enter the payment you made with your extension, type "federal extension payment" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to federal extension payment." That takes you to the screen that says "Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid." Scroll down a little to the second section, "Payments with Extension." Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for Payment with 2023 federal extension.

OR you can do the following.

  • Click the Federal Taxes tab. (In Premium or Home & Business click Personal.)
  • Click Deductions & Credits.
  • Click "I'll choose what I work on" (if asked).
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
  • Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for Other Income Taxes.
  • On the "Other income taxes" page, click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for "Payment with 2023 federal extension."
