Question

I put info in for my 1099 misc form but it keeps asking about sole proprietorship. I don't own the business I just worked a few catering jobs.

This is because of the way your employer paid you. If you received a 1099-MISC with an amount in Box 7 for Nonemployee Compensation, you are generally considered to be self-employed. You would be subject to self-employment tax, which is for Social Security and Medicare, as well as regular income tax.

If that's the way you were paid, there was no withholding from your pay, and TurboTax will create a business for you on Schedule C.

If you don't have any expenses to claim for this income, you can continue using TurboTax Deluxe online. Otherwise, you'll need TurboTax Self-Employed.
