I received a letter from the IRS stating something about identity theft they wanted me to mail in a copy of my W2 my last check stub and ID but wasn't able to do this whole coronavirus issue

I’m not sure why coronavirus would keep you from using a copying machine or from going to the post office to buy a stamp. Answering tax problems is certainly essential business.

 

The IRS conducts business by mail. If the letter tells you to mail in certain documents to verify your identity, then you must provide the documents by mail. There is no other way to verify your identity that the IRS will accept.  In normal times you could bring the documents in person to an IRS office, but I believe the in person offices are closed. The IRS performs some activities online, but if your letter tells you to mail in your documents then that is the only thing you can do.
