Question

I received a stimulus check for $1200 via direct deposit. I'm wondering why I received it due to the fact that I'm only 16. Though I did filey taxes independently I'm not sure if I am allowed to keep

Am I aloud to keep the money? Did I receive this because I filed taxes?

You received the stimulus payment because you filed a tax return and indicated that no one can claim you as a dependent. (It doesn't matter whether they actually do claim you. What matters is whether someone can claim you.) If it's true that no one can claim you as a dependent, then you are entitled to the payment. Your age does not affect your eligibility for the stimulus payment. Also, the stimulus payment is actually an advance of a credit on your 2020 tax return. So if you expect that you will not be able to be claimed as a dependent for 2020, you should just keep the payment. But even if you are not entitled to it, there is apparently no legal obligation to return an incorrect stimulus payment.

If you are not entitled to the payment for 2019 and you do not expect to be entitled to it for 2020, and you want to return it, see "Returning the Economic Impact Payment" near the bottom of the FAQ at the following link on the IRS web site.
