Question

I started but did not complete my 2016 taxes on TT. How can I ensure that the erroneous 2016 info is not being imported into my 2017 TT forms?

After you transfer the 2016 data into the 2017 return, TurboTax will show you what has transferred in and ask you what things you want to keep (names of charities, banking institutions, etc.).   And as you go through the interview, on the summary pages TurboTax will show 2 columns--one with the 2016 amounts that transferred in (for comparison) and the 2017 column that you are working on.

It also looks like you are using the desktop version of Deluxe for Windows.   Do you have the *.tax2016 data file from last year's return?

If so, when you launch 2017 TurboTax and select to begin a new tax return, TurboTax will churn a few seconds while it's looking for the *.tax2016 data file. When it finds it, it will ask you if you want to transfer the data in.

If it doesn't find it, then you can use the browse button to tell TurboTax where the file is located. The best location for the *.tax2016 data file is in the \My Documents\TurboTax folder, which is the default folder and the first place it will look.

But as a SuperUser rebab has said, it will not automatically enter the values into the 2017 fields.
