Why did my federal taxes get filed when I did not select the file option yet

Unless you actually clicked a big orange button that said "Transmit my returns now" your return has not been e-filed. Click on Add a State so that you can get back in to the return to continue working on it. You will not really have to add a state, but that will get you back in to the return.
