Question

I started my 2021 return last year but never submitted it. And I'm ready to file my 2022 return. Do I need to submit my 2021 return with my 2022 return?

Or when I file my 2022 return will it include 2021 automatically?

Your 2021 return cannot be e-filed.  E-filing has been permanently closed for 2021 returns since October of 2022.  You need to mail in your 2021 return.  Print, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.   When you are asked for a 2021 AGI in order to e-file 2022, use zero since the IRS does not have a 2021 AGI in the system for you.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
