I was a victim of identity theft, I just finished my returns. Can I submit electronically or do I have to print and mail?

Did you report the identity theft to the IRS and did you receive a 6 digit Identity Protection PIN from the IRS?

Whether your return can be filed electronically depends on the type of identity theft you experienced. You can try to submit your return electronically and see if it is accepted.

As DoninGA points out, identity theft should be reported to the IRS and if they gave you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), you have to include that on your tax return. Please click here to learn more.

If you do have an IP PIN, this is how to enter it:

  1. Sign in to your account and open your return. If your return was e-filed and rejected, you will need to click on Fix my return.
  2. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  3. Select Other Tax Situations on the left.
  4. Scroll down/ expand the list and look for Other Return Info.
  5. Expand the section and  click on Start or Update to the right of Identity Protection PIN.
  6. Answer the first question Yes.
  7. Find your name and click Add to the right.
  8. Enter the number on the next screen.
  9. At this point, you can complete and file your tax return.
