You can add or remove your IP PIN by using the instructions below.

  1. Open your return if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for IP PIN (don't forget the space) and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, answer No instead.
  4. Select Continue.

How do I do this if I already filed my tax return

The IRS issues an IP PIN to confirmed victims of identity theft.

If your tax return has been e-filed and does not include your 6 digit IP PIN, the return will be rejected when it is transmitted to the IRS.  The 6 digit IP PIN can be added by these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click Other tax situations.
  • Scroll down to Identity Protection PIN.
  • Click Start to the right.
  • Enter 6 digit IP PIN.
  • Correct other reject issues, if any.
  • Re-transmit.

The 6 digit Identity Protection Select PIN will be required whether you e-file or mail your tax return.

Please see this IRS publication to see how to retrieve your IP PIN.
