Question

I was duped by carefully crafted turbotax graphics into paying for the ability to use a refund from fed to pay for state. How can I reverse that charge?

The MAXpro spam in TT is fairly obvious but the charge for the ability to pay state from fed refund is not exposed when teh question appears and is well hidden and didn't appear obvious until finalized. AND I didn't even need it as both were refunds. So I paid for something I didn't use or end up needing becaue TT was sneaky about it.  How to I contact TT to refund that?

You misunderstood.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue.  If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help.  Do not use the word “refund.”

You must have misunderstood something.  A federal tax refund can Never be used to pay for state taxes owed.

In the File section of the program on Step 2 when state taxes are owed you are given several options on how to pay the state taxes.  Paying the taxes with a federal tax refund is Not one of those options.
