Question

I was in a RDP and I got married

Last tax year, 2020, I was in a non-married RDP. We filed as we were supposed to for Federal and California. This year, we are now married and I used the mock federal from last year to start this years taxes. Our return got rejected because the AGI didn't match what the Fed had on file. Should I be using my federal return from last year, instead of the joint "mock" fed return from last year?

It does not matter where you begin, only where you end. Both of you on one return with correct numbers. When filing, it asks for AGI from last year. It would have prefilled an amount but you should change it to the correct answer for each of you. Along with any other forms that may have needed prior year information. The final forms should have the correct answers. Be sure to view your final return for accuracy before going back to file and correct the AGI.

    Congratulations!
