Question

I was not self-employed in 2019. I am filing my taxes with a W-2 this year. Why do I have to pay $120 for TurboTax Self Employed, if I’m not filing as self-employed?

If you did not have any Self-Employment income to enter, there would be no reason to upgrade to that program. You can clear and start over to get to a more simple program. If prompted to upgrade to SE, just don't do it.

How do I clear and start over in TurboTax Online?

As long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered, you can erase your return and start from scratch in TurboTax Online.

  1. Sign in and select a topic to continue your return.
  2. On the next screen, from the left-side menu, select Tax Tools, and then Clear & Start Over (select the menu icon in the upper-left corner if you don't see this menu).
  3. Answer Yes in the pop-up to confirm.
