Question

I was unable to E-file my 2017 and 2018 returns. I down loaded my returns for 2017 and 2018. There are over a hundred pages each. What do I file?

Efiling for tax year 2018 and older is closed by the IRS permanently and forever. E-filing for 2019 taxes is not open yet, and a definitive open date has not been released by the IRS. Probably mid January at best. (But don't count on it)

For a prior year tax return you have to print, sign and mail it to the IRS.

If you completed your 2017 and 2018 tax returns with the online version of TurboTax, that means you downloaded the PDF and printed it. That PDF has *EVERYTHING* in it. All worksheets, calculation forms and all. What pages you mail to the IRS depends on what you reported on your tax return. But basically, you'll send the 1040 and all Schedules that were printed. (SCH-1 thru 6, SCH C, SCH E, etc., etc., etc.,)

Where you mail them depends on where you are physically at on the planet. See https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment and if you are not residing in the country, scroll all the way to the bottom of that page.

On that PDF, keep both an electronic copy *AND* a physical hard copy of that return "FOREVER". The day will come when you will either be glad you did, or you'll hear that little voice in the back of your head. That little voice will be me, saying "I told you so." 🙂

Oh one more thing. Send each tax return in a *physically* *separate* envelope. If you send more than one tax return in the same envelope, chances or *EXTREMELY* *HIGH* you will have issues and may *NEVER* get any refund you may be due.

For federal tax returns you print the Form 1040 and all supporting forms and schedules which have an Attachment Sequence Number located in the upper right corner of the form or schedule.  All other worksheets and information only pages are NOT included with the tax return.

The tax returns can only be printed and mailed to the IRS.  Use separate envelopes for each tax year.  Consider using a tracking service from the US Post Office that includes a return receipt so that you will know the IRS received the tax returns.

Print, sign, date and mail the tax return to the IRS.  Include with the mailed return any forms W-2 and 1099 which have taxes withheld.  Go to this IRS website for mailing addresses - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

There are no penalties for filing a tax return after the due date if filing for a tax refund or there are no taxes owed.
