I work a part time delivery job and the amounts in box 1 and 3 are different on my W2s. Why would that be?

For my full time salaried job the amounts for wages (box 1) and social security wages (box 3) are always the same.  While entering my w2 info on turbotax for my part time job, turbotax told me that too much social security was withheld.  And I realized that the amounts are different.  Why would this be?  I am waiting to hear back from the corporate payroll office but it will probably take forever.  This part time job does include tips in addition to hourly wages that are included in box 1.  Just curious why box 3 might be different.  Does it have something to do with it being a "tipping" job?

Yes, that's correct.  You should also have an amount in Box 7 and/or Box 8 of the W2 for the tipping job.

The combined amount of Box 7 and Box 3 will be the total of your social security wages. If you add those two boxes together and multiply by .062 this should give you the amount in Box 4. (see image attached)

You can go directly to the area to enter your W2 in TurboTax online

1. Sign into your account and select your current return.

2. Select  My Account on the top right and then select Tools

3. Select Topic Search (see attached image)

4. Search for W2 and select Go

5. Follow the interview to enter your information.

You can go directly to enter the information using these steps either TurboTax desktop.

1. Search box in the upper right

2. Search for W2

3. Jump to W2 (see image attached)

4. Edit the W2 for change
