I work at a hotel and am compensated with a room to live in in lieu of money, is that considered self-employed or what?

No, you are not self-employed. The employer "should" be including the value of the room you are compensated with, in box 1 of the W-2 they "should" be issuing you already, for the money they pay you. (I'm sure you don't work only for the room, but are paid money too so that you can buy food to eat, along with clothing and other necessities. )
