Question

I worked at a resort for 2 days to help out a friend/coworker. I made less than $200. Their accountants told me they will not issue a w-2 if I made less than $600. I don't have the pay stub.

I worked at a resort for 2 days to help out a friend. I made less than $200 and I don't have a pay stub. Their accounting department won't issue a w-2 since I made less than $600. How do I report this income?

This is self-employed income, but there is no self-employment tax due as the amount is less than $400. You could then report this amount as Other reportable income.

In TurboTax, open your return and follow these steps:

  • Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Wages and Income on top of the screen
  • Scroll down to All Income, locate the Less Common Income section
  • Click Show more and click Start next to Miscellaneous Income at the bottom
  • On the next page, click Start next to Other Reportable Income (see attached screenshot).

Its not self employed? That's what I don't understand. My husband also works there and he got a w-2 because he has worked more than I did. I just ended up not staying after 2 days because they didn't need me after that. I was on the payroll. I had to fill out an application and all the standard tax papers when I applied. The resort is a parent company of the place I work full time and the application was the exact same.

As MinhT1 said, it IS self-employment, but because you didn't receive more than $400 in income, you don't owe any self-employment taxes.

You don't want to report it as self-employed income in TurboTax because that will create a Schedule C and possibly a Schedule SE.

The fact that you did not receive a W-2 suggests that the facility didn't withhold and pay any Social Security or Medicare taxes for you either.

It's better to do what MinhT1 suggested and just report it as Miscellaneous Income.
