Question

I worked in CA in 2024, my spouse worked and lived in NJ, what's the best state filing status to choose, MFJ or MFS? The desktop version of Turbotax assigned picked non-resident for both states, should I change NJ to full-year resident?

Btw, I lived in CA starting from 01/01/2024, and Turbotax picked "California Schedule D Worksheet for Non residents and Part-Year Residents" for us.  How to choose following choices?

(Sch D Wks for Part-Year and Nonresidents: Residency Status must be entered)

    Full Year Nonresident

    Part-Year Res - Moved In

    Part-Year Res - Moved Out

    Thanks!

If you lived and worked in CA for the entire year of 2024 and your spouse lived and worked in NJ for all of 2024, then you would file separately for the states which each of you filing as a resident of the state.  You would not file a non-resident return if you lived in the state for the entire year.

You can file a joint federal and separate states, or you can file separate federal and state returns.

How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?
