Any money sent to an inactive or closed account was returned to the IRS, as is required by law.

The IRS has issued a status that taxpayers seeing "Payment Status #2 - not available" displayed on or after January 5, 2021, on the IRS tracking tool Get My Payment will not receive an Economic Impact Payment ("stimulus check") until they file their 2020 tax return.

Any other status could indicate that the taxpayer may still receive the payment. However, the status in these cases is still unclear.  All taxpayers who have not received a direct deposit or a mail date for a check or debit card by January 15, 2021, may claim the credit on the 2020 tax return.

Information is rapidly changing regarding the IRS intent to reissue payments to accounts impacted by the processing error.

Due to the volume of questions and posts, we are unlikely to update individual answers as changes occur.  Therefore, we encourage you to regularly check the following sites for additional information: IRS Updates on the Second Stimulus and here: TurboTax updates on the second stimulus.  Both of these sites will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

You may also wish to consult the IRS Statement about Second Economic Impact Payment. This statement was issued on January 5, 2021, and updated on the evening of January 7, 2021.
