Question

If I acquired unemployment last year, why do I have to put in my parent's tax/social information for Form 8615 if I was living alone and paying for my own expenses?

Form 8615 considers the unemployment benefits from 2020 as unearned income, but I am filing my return as an individual and not a dependent. Why do I need to put in my parent's information before filing my return?

Make sure you entered you indicated that you are NOT a Dependent in the Personal Info section and that your Birthdate is correct.

If your only income is Unearned Income, and you are a certain age, you may need to file Form 8615.
