Question

If I am a full-time student, and claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, do I have to file a 8615?

I am a full-time undergraduate student and filed as dependent by my parents, and TurboTax is saying I need to fill out a 8615 form for "unearned income" because the scholarships and grants I received were more than half of my support, but my research says that shouldn't count if I'm a full-time student, so I am a little confused. Do I need to file the 8615? If not, how do I get TurboTax to stop asking me to fill it in? Thank you!

It looks like you may be subject to what is called the Kiddie Tax.

If you are age 19-23 , and you had unearned income in 2017, you might be subject to the Kiddie Tax, and report this on Form 8615.

It means that your unearned income will be taxed at your parents rate instead of your own tax rate.

If you did not provide more than half of your own support with earned income(not scholarships), you will be asked these questions about your parents.

Being a full-time student isn't the issue here. That's for whether or not your parents can claim you if you had income of $4050 or more.

Alright, I think that helps! So basically even if more than half of my support came from scholarships, that's unearned income so it doesn't count and I probably have to fill out that form anyway?
