If I claim my son as a dependent will he get less, or be offered less FAFSA for college?

Only FAFSA can answer that.   However, FAFSA currently includes questions that are used to determine whether the student satisfies the statutory requirements to be considered an independent student. These criteria include whether the student is over age 24, is married, has dependents other than a spouse, is in graduate school or is a veteran.  All other students are considered to be dependent.

As for your tax returns, your son cannot "claim himself" on his taxes if he qualifies  to be claimed by you under IRS rules, even if you choose not to do so.
