If I do contract work for a company based out of my state and do work all over the country, am I filing as "made money out of state?"

Yes.  Out-of-state income is income you made from physically working in a state or states other than your state of residence.

States with an income tax can tax non-residents on income earned from physically working within their borders.  You would have to file a non-resident tax return in any state in which your income exceeded that state's filing threshold for non-residents (which varies from state to state).
