If I don't know the price I paid for a company stock I bought over the course of years can I take an average price to report for capital gain or loss after I have sold it

    Yes. You'll need to do a little research to arrive at your cost basis for the stock you sold.  Please see the below FAQ regarding calculating your cost basis, if not obtained from the broker. It lists some acceptable methods for you: https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3300454
