If you don’t have a copy of your 2019 return—and used TurboTax—log into your account to get a PDF copy of your tax return.

See How do I access a prior year return?

If you did not use TurboTax, you can get a transcript from the IRS. A transcript is not a full copy. It shows you the numbers from your tax return. Go to Welcome to Get Transcript.

You may need a prior year return for several reasons:

  • To find last year’s adjusted gross income. The IRS uses this number as an e-file security check. You can also use your five-digit filing PIN if you remember that.
  • To determine if your state tax return is taxable. If you itemized deductions, your state tax refund may be taxable. TurboTax includes a calculation that uses numbers from your previous year’s return to figure this out.
  • To compute underpayment penalties. If you owe tax this year, you may have to pay penalty and interest if your withholding and credits were less than the smaller of 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax for the current year (or 110 percent if your income is high enough).
