Question

If I get married, how will my refund be affected? Right now they are not working, we have a child, and I file as head of household.

It depends on what your income will be when you get married. Generally, you, filing as head of household with one child, your combined refund may not be as good because you'll be a two income family. When you file only one income, the income taxes are less than when you combine two incomes.

One way to estimate is to do a "what-if" tax return. Create a new account in TurboTax and enter your future spouse's and your tax information, using your 2019 tax data.

  • Using TurboTax Online, you don't have to pay because you won't be filing.
