If I make a product...like a costume that I then wear and get paid to wear it at an event...do I claim direct labor that I did myself to make the costume (the product)?

No, you would not. If you did claim that labor, you would be taxed on it.

It would be a wash/net zero, you would have to claim that income and then deduct that expense in the same amount.
