If I sent my return to a valid but wrong account number and the bank doesn't accept it because it isn't in my name will I receive a paper check instead?

Yes. The IRS will try to deposit the funds into the bank, and when the bank rejects them, the funds will be sent back to the IRS and they will send you a paper check.
