Question

If I was in college part time but did full time of work, can my mother still claim me or would I have to do it myself?

It's perfectly possible your mother could qualify to claim you. Take special note the key word here is "QUALIFY". It does not matter if she actually claims you or not. If she "qualifies" to claim you, then you must select the option for "I can be claimed on someone else's tax return", when completing your own tax return. For her to qualify to claim you the requirements are:

If the student:

 - Was under the age of 19 on Dec 31 of the tax year

 *******************OR******************************

 - What under the age of 24 on Dec 31 of the tax year and;

 - Was enrolled as a full time student for any one semester that started during the tax year and;

 - Was enrolled in a program of study that will lead to a degree or credentialed certification and

 - Was enrolled in an accredited institution and

 - the STUDENT did not provide MORE than half OF THEIR OWN SPUPORT for the entire tax year, then;

The parent qualifies to claim the student as a dependent on the parent's tax return.

Take note of two things with the above requirements;

1. There is no requirement for the parent to provide the student any support. Note one penny. The support requirement is on the student. Third party income such as scholarships, grants, 529 distributions, gifts from Aunt Mary etc. etc. etc., do not count for the student providing their own support.

2. The student's earnings do not matter. There is no limit. The student could earn a million dollars and still qualify to be claimed as a dependent on the parent's tax return.
