Question

If my parents receive SSI but I pay half the rent and other expenses. Can I claim them as a dependant? If so, does me claiming them as a dependant affect their SSI?

I don’t want to claim them if they’re going to be affected in any way.

You can claim a parent who is an SSI recipient as a dependent if you meet the test for a qualifying relative per Table 5 from IRS Publication 501 at this link. See comments by @DavidS127 on this thread. You must have provided more than half of their support.

See here for more information from the Social Security Administration on SSI. The Gross Income of an adult SSI recipient would affect SSI benefits but not support received from a relative. A child's SSI recipient's benefits may be affected by their parent's income.
