Question

If my state does not have state taxes why do i have an amount in box 16 of my W2 that refers to state wages and tips? On my other W2 I do not have an amount in this box.

On this same W2 I also have the same amount in boxes 1, 3, and 5 that is found in 16. I am curious if my employer made an error in reporting.

Nine states — AlaskaFloridaNevadaNew HampshireSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasWashington and Wyoming — have no state income taxes.

If your state has no state income tax, it is not in the drop down menu of Box 15 of form W-2. Just leave boxes 15 and 16 blank even if your state is listed in box 15 and box 16 is filled with an amount on your form W-2.

Some payroll programs will automatically transfer the amount in box 1 to box 16 but you can ignore it if your state has no state taxes.
