Question

if we get a 1095, but got no financial assistance, can you use the other area to input your premiums?

There are 2 sections in turbo tax where i can put healthcare premiums paid. If received a 1095, it wants me to only use the 1095 area to input the data, but if not marketplace, there is a section that just asks how much did you pay in premiums. Since I got no assistance at all going through marketplace, it would have been the same price if I just went through the insurance company directly. That being the case, and no assistance given at all to me, could I just use the spot for non marketplace premiums? When I put the number there I get my tax deduction.  Thanks!

You can include any medical expense that you paid for out-of-pocket in the medical section of Schedule A.

Medical, dental, and vision expenses are reported on Schedule A and entered in the Deductions & Credits section.

    1. With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
    2. Answer Yes on the Did you spend more than $3,000 on medical expenses in 2020? screen.
    3. Enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions, on the following screens.
