Question

If you already filed & scheduled a payment bc you owed in, but now you should owe less/none due to the unemployment law do you still need to let the payment process?

Can you cancel the payment pending for 04/15 since it has not processed yet and wait for the unemployment info to update within TurboTax to see the correct amount owed or if anything is owed at all?

Only you can cancel a tax payment.

Go to this IRS website for how to cancel a payment for federal taxes owed - https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Any federal taxes owed must be paid on or before May 17, 2021.  Unless you live in a state declared as a federal disaster area and the the IRS has issued a change to June 15, 2021 for paying taxes owed for those affected by the disaster.
