If the return was already submitted by you, then any changes would require an amended return.

The IRS accepts a social security number on a tax return once a year unless specifically identified that the person is filing as single, but will also be claimed on someone else's return as a dependent.

If you have not filed and are getting an error that your social security number was already filed, if you cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, then you may have an identity theft issue.
