Question

Incorrect HSA contribution on W2 - can I override on form 8889?

Employer switched HR system in 2024 and made a big mess. The W-2 has the wrong number for HSA contribution. I contributed $5700 to a family HSA account via payroll deduction last year but on W-2 only showing $2950. I don't think they will have the capacity to (or even want to) issue a corrected W-2. Can I just input the correct numbers on Form 8889 and file my return? When I tried to do that, TT gives me the warning that Form 8889 Line 9 should match W-2 Box 12 W. Can I file anyway?

W-2 reported wages has the following items subtracted:

Less Medical FSA: 3256.22 (I do not even have a FSA. I'm guessing they misclassified some HSA as FSA)

Less Other Cafe 125: 7379.02

Less Box 12: W 2950 (This should have been $5700 that I contributed via payroll deduction)

You would have to file your W-2 using the "substitute W-2" form.  Enter the W-2 as you think it should be, and check the box for "I need to make corrections to my W-2" on the page of special circumstances.  This will trigger Turbotax to prepare the substitute W-2 form.

However, you should ask for a corrected W-2 first, and document their refusal or inability (save your email, etc) before filing with the substitute W-2 form.
