After reading publication 525, it appears to me that I should not have received a 1099-NEC for less than $600, but I did. It appears from reading pages 2 and 17 of IRS pub 525, that I can exclude this income. But how do I exclude it on the form?

If you meet the requirements, you can report under "Other Income" and enter the same amount with a negative number to offset the positive amount.

To enter under Other Income, here are the steps:

In TurboTax online program:

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • To the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "other reportable income" and Enter
  • Select Jump to other reportable income
  • Next screen, Other Wages Received, select No to continue
  • Next screen, scroll down all the way to the bottom, under Other reportable income, select Start
  • Next screen, Any Other Taxable Income? select Yes to continue

Per IRS, if you are a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical responder, do not include in your income the following benefits you receive from a state or local government.

  • Rebates or reductions of property or income taxes you receive because of services you performed as a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical responder
  • Payments you receive because of services you performed as a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical responder, up to $50 for each month you provided services.

The excluded income reduces any related tax or contribution deduction.  For details, click here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p525.pdf  ( page 17)
