IRS rejected my return saying the VIN for our electric car does not match their database. How do I rectify this?

I confirmed that I entered the VIN correctly and asked the dealer to confirm they submitted it correctly. It is an eligible vehicle for the tax credit.

    You should do as @OlyDad did and contact your dealership and request a copy of what was filed with the IRS.

    A VIN is a long string of characters.  Errors are always possible.  If you are certain that you have entered the VIN correctly then I would paper file the return and attach a picture of the VIN with the return.  It is possible that there was an error at the manufacturer or the dealer or the IRS.  

     

    Mailing in your return will significantly increase the time period that you will have to wait for your refund.  So will having the incorrect VIN in the system.  Before mailing the return you might check with the dealership (the only one in the set that you can effect) and double check how they entered the VIN when they reported the sale of the car.

    It turns out that the dealer never submitted the proper paperwork to the IRS.  If anyone else runs across this same issue make the dealer show you proof that they followed through with their submittal.
