This income was a ONE TIME only income, not employment.  I answered all Turbo Tax questions and your system didn't add the additional $1800 in self employment taxes.  Why ?

Whether or not TurboTax treats the income as self employment income depends on how you answer the questions. The IRS normally considers any 1099-MISC income entered in box 7 to be self employment income even if you don't.

The IRS defines self-employment work as:

 · Selling goods or performing a service on a continual basis; "continual basis" could mean daily, once a month or even once a year.

 · Side work you did using your trade or regular "day job" profession; even if you only did the work one-time for a friend.

The definition of Self-Employment is very broad, and includes many activities. The main definition centers on frequency, intent to earn income, and profession.

If you agree with the IRS that this was self employment income, follow the instructions on the letter as to what the IRS wants you to do. If you disagree with the IRS finding, follow the instructions on the letter for how to take exception to their finding.
