If my company is hired to perform work for another company are they considered my current or former employer?

When you are self employed you do not have an EMPLOYER of any kind.  The people/companies you work for are called customers.  Employers withhold FICA taxes and send you a W-2 at the end of the year.   If your company is unincorporated then the customer may send you a 1099-misc at the end of the year.
