Is it mandatory to file prior year tax returns before filing the current year?

Hello,

I have a special situation. I am yet to file my 2019 returns and sending the returns by mail as e-filing date is past.

While 2019 returns are in the mail, can I still go ahead and file 2020 returns today electronically?

Appreciate your answer.

Yes. You can e-file your 2020 return even if you did not file 2019. TurboTax will ask for your 2019 AGI. Use $0 because the IRS has not processed your 2019 return. Right now, it will show as not being filed in the IRS system.

The sooner you file 2020 the better. The IRS is using the 2020 return for the third stimulus payment.

Thank you Ernie for the answer.

I have a follow up question.. I have not received any stimulus checks till date. I am guessing that it is due to my non filing of 2018 & 2019 returns. I am doing those returns together now.

As per your advice, I am going to e-file the 2020 return today. My follow up question: Is there a place in Turbotax to mention that I haven't received any stimulus checks? Do they process and send the 1st and 2nd payments as well??

    Please let me know

After you are done entering your income and deductions in TurboTax, before you complete your return, you will be asked how much you received for the first and second round stimulus payments. Once you indicate that you haven't received them, they will be added to your 2020  tax return refund.
